Sad, sad news... According the the Milwaukee Journal
The medical staff at the Milwaukee County Zoo euthanized Lucy, the 46-year-old African elephant, earlier this morning, zoo officials reported.
The 9,000-pound pachyderm was found lying in her stall this morning and the medical staff followed a predetermined protocol to deal with her condition.
Lucy's condition first became worrisome in June, when she fell and was unable to right herself in the African exhibit yard. A crane assisted Lucy to her feet and she struggled through a difficult few days before improving.
Lucy was delivered to the zoo in 1962 and she lived to be one of the oldest African elephants in captivity.
