Happy Birthday, Diana

Next month is the 65th birthday of Princess Diana of Themyscira, otherwise known as Wonder Woman. She first appeared in All Star Comics #8 in December 1941. Her second appearance was in Sensation Comics #1 the following January. Then, in the summer of 1942 she got her own comic book series. From 1975-1979 actress Linda Carter played the Amazon Wonder on the small screen. While Wonder Woman was not the first women to have her own comic book series, she is probably the most well known - have YOU heard of Nelvana of the Northern Lights? Exactly!

Her powers: Flight, super-strength, super-speed, durability, highly developed fighting skills, enhanced hearing, enhanced vision, animal empathy, regeneration, high resistance to magic, astral projection into mythic lands.

Her weapons: The Lasso of Truth (created from the Golden Girdle of Gaea) and indestructible bracelets/gauntlets (formed from the shield Aegis).

Did you Know?
  • According to DC comics official statistics, Wonder Woman stands 6 ft and weighs 165 lb (74–75 kg), but she is frequently depicted as being the same height as the 6 ft 3in (1.93 m) Superman. It could be said that this is because in some versions her boots are drawn as having three to five inch heels on them, although most artists since the George PĂ©rez reboot have depicted her with flat soles while still often portraying her as equally tall as Superman. (Incidentally, Diana is not the tallest heroine in the DC Universe. That title is shared by Grace Choi of the Outsiders and Big Barda, who at 7 feet tall both usually stand a head above Superman.)Wonder Woman and Aquaman were frequently paired on Super Friends. During Grant Morrison's run on the rebooted JLA title, the two "royal" characters were occasionally shown to have an unconsummated mutual attraction, possibly as an homage to their Super Friends pairings, but nothing came of this subplot.
  • Wonder Woman is commonly thought of as the most beautiful of all DC superheroines, if not the most beautiful woman in the DC Universe (a fact Blue Beetle mentions in Countdown to Infinite Crisis). Starfire, Power Girl, Black Canary and Catwoman are held in similar esteem within the DCU.
You can google or Wikipedia Wonder Woman for even more details about the Amazon Princess.

Happy Birthday, Wonder Woman. Keep those boys in line.
