Topps Shuts Down Wizkids

You know Heroclix, Pirates, MechWarrior... collectable miniature games that have been exceedingly popular in many game stores including Neptune. The company that makes them is Wizkids, which is owned by card maker Topps.

In another demonstration of our weak economy Topps is shutting down the Wizkids division. From ICv2: The Topps Company is announcing today that it is closing down WizKids, its core hobby gaming business, and temporarily discontinuing the WizKids product lines.

They claim it's a consolidation move, and that they'll try to find, "strategic alternatives so that viable brands and properties, including HeroClix, can continue without any noticeable disruption."

I don't know if they'll be able to find these alternatives or not. My guess is that they may sell off the division, or if Topps continues to be in control of the brand we will see cutbacks and changes to the line. Financial hardship for companies is really starting to become very real and visible to the general populace now. Circut City stock is trading for pennies and declaring Chapter 11, for gosh sake. It can't be easy for companies like game makers that have already seen some consolidation in tghe market to face the threat of an even larger slide in retail.
