MORE Excitement!

It seems a week can't go by where something nearly disasterous doesn't happen. Last week it was the armed robber across the street. Last night it was our back yard tree. At 7:45 pm we get a call at the store from our neighbor, telling us that part of our back yard tree got torn off in the wind and was blocking our back door and had pulled down power lines. She suggested we get home quick to evaluate the situation before it got too dark for us to see.

We dropped everything and drove home. Upon arriving we see that we still have power, as do our neighbors, but sure enough, a large branch was torn off of the large tree we have in our back yard and it landed on the power lines, pulling the line right down to the ground. It also blocked our back door. There were leaves and small branches all caught up in our Direct TV dish, but the dish was still on. Our back yard light was loose, but didn't get pulled down. But our neighbors were not as lucky. The pole where the power goes from the line into their house was torn off and their electric wires were barely hanging on. We quickly called the electric company and got repair men out to get the power line out of our yard. They did that, but the neighbors line was so badly ripped that the electric company had to disconnect them and won't restore their service until they get someone out to fix the connection to their house. We really lucked out because aside from having some large branches to remove and having to tighten up the back yard light, we didn't have any other damage. However, now we have to seriously consider having the back yard tree removed due to safety.

You should be able to click on the pictures to enlarge them, if you want to see the mess close-up.

It's Hard Out Here for a Fangirl

I know that a lot of different people read my blog - people that don't always agree with each other and people that don't always agree with me. So, I try to keep my blog light and fun for the most part, discussing a variety of pop-culture and comic topics, with some glimpses of what it's like to be a comic book retailer thrown in for fun. Occasionally I'll get into topics that are a little stronger and more opinionated - like feminism. With the whole Sideshow's Mary Jane statue flap of late, it seems like the lines have really been drawn and that girls who read comics have started to talk more about what is happening, and what they'd like to see happen, in the genre of superhero comics.

People might not realize it, but it's hard out here for a fangirl! Take, for example, the experience KellyAnn had in the store the other day. A young girl comes into the store with her dad and tells him how she would rather have the Teen Titans Go! comic over the Barbie comic. Now, KellyAnn doesn't say if dad encouraged the Barbie comic over Teen Titans Go!, but one could assume that he at least pointed it out to her - encouraging the young girl to go with the more traditional Barbie over a superhero comic book.

Another in-store example: A mom walks into the store with her son and her daughter. The son is around 10 and the girl around 7. She shows the boy our all-age section and tells him to pick something out. He excitedly looks around. The daughter begs and begs to look too, but mom says, "there's nothing in here for girls, Honey." I walk over and show the mom a couple of things for girls. (I make sure we are fairly well stocked in the all-age section with books that would appeal to young girls and not just Marvel Adventures and Archie.) The mom just kind of shakes her head at me and tells her son to hurry up and pick something because they're going to go to KMart (across the street) so his sister can get something and then they've got to get home.

A third in-store example: We have had a young girl come in here ever since we opened. She was probably around 10 then, and is 13 now. Her and her cousin both enjoyed reading the Teen Titans Go! comics a couple of years ago, and even had a drawing they did together end up in the back of one of the TTG issues. This girl would come in every couple of weeks, on her bike or with her dad, to spend some of her hard-earned newspaper delivery money on comics. A few months ago her dad came in without her to look around for a gift. He mentioned that the girls cousin, the same one that did the TTG drawing a couple of years ago, no longer read comics, unlike his daughter who still comes in and buys comics here. His daughter's cousin was having a sleepover and told his daughter (the one that shops here) that she couldn't bring her comics because it was too embarrassing. I guess comic books are not widely accepted in middle schools among groups of girls.

On occasion I will run into a gal from my past - from before I owned the store. Maybe high school or college. They'll ask me what I'm doing now and when I say I own a comic book store they usually say, "What?" Then, when I repeat myself her eyes will glaze over. Or, to try to seem interested, she'll say something like, "yeah, my brother used to have a bunch of those comics around." or "My dad said he used to have some old Superman comics." But there has never been any excitement - not for my owning my own business or for the fact that it is a comic book business. It's like the very mention of comics has them so uninterested they just can't muster up any enthusiasm. Sometimes shock, where she'll say, "comics?" or "oh, your husband must like comics, how nice of you to help out." Sure, it was his idea to open a comic book store. And no, I hadn't read many comics before this. But I never had any problem with people who DID and now that I do own a store I read them all the time.

Here's another point that I borrowed from a couple of blogs I've read recently - if a man walked into a store that had pictures of nearly naked men wrestling around with each other, toys of half naked men, and t-shirts that had pictures of half naked men in costumes on them - they probably wouldn't come back to that store. But somehow women are supposed to simply accept images of half naked women on comic covers, on toys and on t-shirts. We're just supposed to let it be OK, but no male nudity, for gosh sakes! That's quite the double standard. It is present in most of pop-culture, not just comics, but it definitely exists, and makes being a fangirl all the more challenging.

We have men that shop here that are roommates and both of them buy and read superhero comics. How many women could say the same? None that I know of.

Some women have even thrown in the towel, basically saying that superhero comics aren't for women. We just shouldn't bother because there are enough good non-superhero comics out there and the superhero comic book industry doesn't care if we like what they make or not and frankly, doesn't make it for women anyway. How sad is that? Give up on action? Give up on adventures? Give up on escaping to a world where people can fly and lift cars?

And the worst part - often when women go online and discuss with other fangirls the things they don't like about the current status of superhero comic book fandom men find them and rather than accept the fangirl's take or stay out of the conversation, they go in and insult, even threaten these gals for simply expressing their opinions. They're OK with women in very sexual situations with each other in comics, but if a woman comments negatively on that sexual situation, well she's a dyke - and it's now a bad thing, because she must be ugly too, and fat, otherwise she'd welcome these displays of girl-on-girl comic action. (yeah - because hot, straight girls LOVE to see other half-naked women throttling each other) It's like they're so threatened that the current state of comics might change and they won't be able to see half naked, unrealistically thin women with even more unrealistically large breasts that they have to try to scare us away. Seriously - at least let us have our opinions. After all, with the current "establishment" in superhero comics there's little chance we'll get much change.

Marvel Heroscape

Anyone who has read this blog lately knows that I'm not a fan of Hasbro. The company is horrible to work with as a small retailer for a variety of reasons.

Anyone who has been in our store knows that we don't carry the game Heroscape. The main reason - it's made by Hasbro. That means that you can find it, cheap, in just about any Toys R Us, Target or Wal-Mart. We can't compete in price and we're usually not the first place the average person goes to to shop - meaning that rarely do people buy here first what they can find in their local Wal-Mart. So, we have never carried Heroscape. There have been a few people looking for one piece or another for the game, but usually only for pieces that Wal-Mart and Target clearanced out and sold out of months ago that the person missed.

Anyway, they're going to make a Marvel version of the game. We're still debating on buying any. On one hand there's the whole Hasbro issue. But, on the other hand it features Marvel characters, so our customers and other people might actually come into the store to look for the game. We still have a short time to decide on this one, but so far we just can't decide.

The first installment of the Marvel Heroscape will feature:

Super Heroes:

• Captain America

• Incredible Hulk

• Iron Man

• Spider-Man

• Silver Surfer

Super Villains:

• Abomination

• Thanos

• Venom

• Red Skull

• Doctor Doom

Some Random Stuff

I've got a few things, and rather than doing a post for each I'm just going to mash them into one long post. Deal with it.

TV Reviews

Smallville Finale - I this season was the best so far. Some good action stuff, finally some motivation for Lana, strong Lex story is building and those eps with Green Arrow were awesome. (I hope they do more again next season!) Michael Rosenbaum who plays Lex says he's in for one more, and only one more season, so the next season could be the end of the series. The finale definitely built things up so that you can really see Lex's hatred for alien life and his plans to "protect the planet from the threat" regardless of financial and ethical costs. (Hidden spoiler - highlight to read) But Lana blowing up - yeah I didn't buy that for a second. And Bizarro Superman - not bad, but he should have talked all crazy.

Heroes Finale - Great show. I'm looking forward to next season already. My only problem - I thought Peter and Sylar should have had a better fight there at the end. I was really hoping for a good fight, and didn't get it. But otherwise I felt that it was a solid show and a good ending.

Graphic Novel Reviews

I read Walking Dead Vol. 5 and loved it. This is always one graphic novel I make the time to read. Let's just say there's some sweet revenge at hand - even if it might cost her her sanity. It's one of the best fiction stories of people in the worst conditions trying to survive that I've read - always a good examination of humans at both their best and their worst, and this volume was no different.

Plain Janes is the first release from DC's MINX line of books for teen and pre-teen girls. Overall I thought it was good. Not great, but good. Some of the things - a girl all hung up on a foreign guy in a coma, art making everyone - even the popular girl - happy and liberated - I felt were a bit of a stretch. The middle part of the story was kind of drawn out, and most of it was fairly predictable. But, I could see how pre-teen and teen age girls could relate to it. There were things like crushes on boys, finding friends at a new school, and overprotective parents that I could relate to when I was younger. I hope girls will read and enjoy it - although so far we've only sold one copy to an adult woman. My one criticism of the whole line of books is that they should be in color. I know they're trying to appeal to manga readers - but manga readers read manga, they probably won't read this. And color, even in manga, always sells better - ALWAYS.

Game Review

Well, it's not much of a review as a comment. We tried playing Marvel Heroes board game last weekend and it took us over an hour to set it all up, and we still haven't figured out yet how to actually play it. The instruction book is deceptively thin. I'm sure once we get it figured out it will be easy, and it's supposed to be pretty fun. But dang, figuring out how to play it is enough to get me not to play it.

Random Question

WHY is Dark Tower: Gunslinger Born #4 selling only about half of the first 3 issues?

Rumors

Lots of rumors about our local comic book community. Stores closing, stores for sale. But you can't believe a one of them. We're still trying to figure out how to get a second store open. If we could just get a partner to buy in...

Reminders

Next week Monday the 28th is Memorial Day. UPS will be closed on Monday, so comics are a day late.

The Star Wars stamps will be available starting this Friday the 25th. My post office clerk said get there early because they expect them to be gone by the end of the day and there will be several weeks before they get more in stock.

Previews orders are due by Friday the 25th - if you're ordering something from the May catalog better let us know soon.

News Bit

What city, divided by a river of the same name, was the imperial capital of Vietnam? The answer to this question — Hue — won 14-year-old Caitlin Snaring from Redmond, Wash., a $25,000 college scholarship Wednesday at the 19th annual National Geographic Bee. Caitlin is only the second girl to win in the bee's history.

If your issue is that there aren't enough female voices in the medium, I completely agree with you, and have been supporting female creators of gift for years for precisely this reason.

If your issue is that there aren't any female voices in the medium, then I commend this partial list, composed off the top of my head in two minutes, for your attention.

(I'd add Alison Bechdel and Arial Schrag, but I haven't read them, and I missed off others whose work I don't personally enjoy)

If your issue is that there aren't enough female voices writing your favourite corporate-owned
superhero titles, then, frankly, your problems are deeper and broader than you think.

Keep fighting. Keep kicking. But never, ever act like the women already working in the medium aren't there, just because they're not writing Batman or Supergirl.

(Heidi's going to keep talking about this at The Beat all week, I'm sure. Heidi, as an editor, did the heavy lifting when I wanted Colleen to work with me on ORBITER, and got Pia Guerra on Y. Of all the people going off over the role of gender in comics this week, Heidi's the one with
factory-floor experience.)

Last Friday's Excitement - Updated Again

WE had some excitement here last Friday with lots of cops and an armed robber. According to a customer who's a cop, as well as this news bite I found online, they think they've got the guy.

Arrest made in pharmacy robberies

Waukesha police have arrested a Waukesha man they believe robbed the Kmart pharmacy twice in the last month, Lt. William H. Graham said today.

The man, 31, may be charged in Circuit Court later today, Graham said.

The Kmart pharmacy, 120 E. Sunset Drive, was robbed on May 5 and again last Friday. The man demanded OxyContin in both incidents.

In the latest robbery, a handgun and sweatshirt were left near the door of an apartment building about three blocks from the store, Graham said.

With the assistance of federal authorities, police were able to trace the handgun and find the owner.

The owner of the handgun is the man who was arrested on suspicion of committing the crimes, Graham said.

Police searched the man's apartment in the 1500 block of Big Bend but were unable to recover the drugs.

They have not determined if the person committed similar robberies in Hartland, Germantown and West Allis and another one in Waukesha.

World of Warcraft CCG News

I thought I'd post this since we sell a decent amount of cards and Chicago isn't very far from here...
"On June 15th–17th, Chicago will host the second North American stop for the World of Warcraft TCG Darkmoon Faire. The Faire brings to town a slew of activities, ranging from championship-level tournaments to face-off events against Blizzard and UDE employees. The main event of the Darkmoon Faire will be the Dream Machine Championship, in which players will have the chance to win an ultimate gaming computer, invitations to the WoW TCG National Championship, and other incredible prizes. DMF: Chicago will also feature the dedicated PvP server that gives Faire-goers the chance to show off their MMO skills in PvP battles and other in-game contests. "

What you've Been Waiting For

Here we are, once again, time for another exciting examination of which comic books have taken longer than 7 weeks between issues. Some are scheduled this way while others are just plain late.

There really aren't a lot of new comics this week. In fact, this is a fairly small week across the board. (Next week I'm sure we'll be slammed - especially since the whole week will be thrown off because of Memorial Day pushing new comic book day to Thursday. Plus it looks like a new Previews will ship, and I think we're due for another Wizard magazine too. So, that's a lot of boxes right there.) So, there also were not a lot of late books, and nothing like last week's list where half of the late comics had gone 6 or more MONTHS between issues.

Two Marvel titles have gone exactly 7 weeks between issues: Iron Man Hypervelocity #5 and Irredeemable Ant-Man #8. Both saw prior issues hit shelves on April 4th.

Two indie titles have gone 8 weeks between issues: Elephantmen #9 (Image) and Futurama Comics #31 (Bong0). The previous issues of these two comics hit shelves on March 28th.

And the two latest of the few new comics this week were also published by Marvel: Captain America #26 (yes, it's been that long since he was killed) and Criminal #6 (Marvel's Icon imprint). I believe both of these were planned with the huge gaps and aren't technically late.

Congratulations to DC, who does have a few comics coming out this week, but managed not to have anything make it to the list.

What I'm Reading
BIRDS OF PREY #106
CAPTAIN AMERICA #26
COUNTDOWN 49
CRIMINAL #6
DYNAMO 5 #3
ELEPHANTMEN #9
FANTASTIC FOUR #546
NEWUNIVERSAL #6
SPIRIT #6
WONDER WOMAN #9

Joker

Heath Ledger is playing Joker in the upcoming Batman movie. Here's a picture of him in his joker makeup. A bit like "The Crow" only messier. Looks like he'll be a dark Joker - which is good because Joker should be dark.
