It's my ode to the problems of collecting versus just buying comics to read them. It's done in fun, and not with anyone in mind, so no one should take this personally. With all the talk lately about stores not carrying back issue comics anymore and the reports of decreasing prices for variant covers I thought it was time to have some fun with the topic.
Well, your comic book collection is quite the investment.
How much did you pay for that rare Avengers variant?
How much did you spend on your Journey Into Mystery?
Do you have a great job or are you living rent-free?
Sometimes for comics that are only graded “fine.”
And how much did you pay for that comic book showcase
That protects and displays them,
even though it takes up more space?
How do you afford your comic book lifestyle?
How do you afford your comic book lifestyle?
Ah, tell me.
The one where he’s ruthlessly killed at the end of the issue?
And how much will you pay for Batman 427,
Where Joker ruthlessly kills Robin at the end of the issue?
And how much will you pay for rare variant covers?
As much as it takes - you just hand the cash over.

Ah yeah.
Aging long boxes and comics with creases,
Should you just toss them out or still
Your wallet pays dearly for those issues that you missed,
But if you don’t have a full run it makes you really pissed.
How do you afford your comic book lifestyle?

You’re buying what They’re selling.
The issue values aren’t increasing.
You can’t find variants you’re missing.
They’re so happy to reprint it.
You’ll never even read it.
Yeah, reading ain’t collecting.
You’re buying what They’re selling.
You’re buying
You’re buying
You’re buying what they’re selling.
