Lyrics Remix - Cake Rock'n Roll Lifestyle

These lyrics are to be sung to the music for Rock'N Roll Lifestyle by Cake from their Motorcade of Generosity album.

It's my ode to the problems of collecting versus just buying comics to read them. It's done in fun, and not with anyone in mind, so no one should take this personally. With all the talk lately about stores not carrying back issue comics anymore and the reports of decreasing prices for variant covers I thought it was time to have some fun with the topic.

Well, your comic book collection is quite the investment.
How much did you pay for that rare Avengers variant?
How much did you spend on your Journey Into Mystery?
Do you have a great job or are you living rent-free?

Now tickets to conventions and shopping on-line
Sometimes for comics that are only graded “fine.”
And how much did you pay for that comic book showcase
That protects and displays them,
even though it takes up more space?

Now, How do you afford your comic book lifestyle?
How do you afford your comic book lifestyle?
How do you afford your comic book lifestyle?
Ah, tell me.

How much did you pay for the Captain 25,
The one where he’s ruthlessly killed at the end of the issue?
And how much will you pay for Batman 427,
Where Joker ruthlessly kills Robin at the end of the issue?
And how much will you pay for rare variant covers?
As much as it takes - you just hand the cash over.
And how much will you pay for rare variant covers?
As much as it takes - you just hand the cash over.
Ah yeah.

Aging long boxes and comics with creases,
Should you just toss them out or still CGC ‘em?
Your wallet pays dearly for those issues that you missed,
But if you don’t have a full run it makes you really pissed.

How do you afford your comic book lifestyle?
How do you afford your comic book lifestyle?
How do you afford your comic book lifestyle?

Reading ain’t collecting.
You’re buying what They’re selling.
The issue values aren’t increasing.
You can’t find variants you’re missing.
They’re so happy to reprint it.
You’ll never even read it.
Yeah, reading ain’t collecting.
You’re buying what They’re selling.
Reading ain’t collecting.
You’re buying
You’re buying
You’re buying what they’re selling.

I Like a Musical Now and Then, but this?

Tony Award winning Julie Taymor is going to be directing a Spider-Man musical. Yeah, that's what I said, Spider-Man musical. With music and lyrics by Bono. That's right. U2's Bono.

I guess this is the sure sign that comic books have finally come into main stream culture. Spider-Man will be performed on stages with the likes of Cats and Lion King with fabulous costumes and music written by Bono. I have no idea if this will be any good at all though. And I doubt it would appeal to most of the comic book fan-boys, so this is definitely geared for a different audience.

Rock Music for Nerds

One of our customers (thanks Jake) brought in a CD for us on Wednesday. It was a CD from the band Ookla the Mok. They sing lots of geek themed songs and do a pretty good job of it at that. One of the singers sounds a lot like one of the guys from They Might be Giants.

Click here to go to Ookla the Mok's web site.
Click here to hear a few of their tunes.
Click here to read the lyrics of a bunch of their songs.

I guess they do performances at local conventions and stuff, so some of you might have even seen them in person. They have some fun DC Comics and Star Trek songs that we've gotten quit a kick out of as we listen to the CD.
