The Visitors Return!

And by visitors I mean the V. Those of you who, like me, grew up in the 80's, should know EXACTLY what I'm talking about. Those humanoid aliens who arrived from another planet to help earth, we thought, but who actually looked like lizards and ate humans.

ABC has ordered V: The Series for their 2009-2010 TV lineup. It's a remake of the original 1980's series. Here's a promo trailer that gives a glimpse into the series. It looks intense and dark. If they do it right it could be a great series.

The cast has some more well known actors too: The new series boasts an all-star cast including Lost’s Elizabeth Mitchell (aka Juliet), Joel Gretsch (The 4400 / Minority Report / Push), Scott Wolf (Double Dragon / White Squall / Party of Five), Morena Baccarin (Firefly / Serenity / Stargate SG-1) and lan Tudyk (Firefly).

The series is written by Scott Peters, who also wrote The 4400, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, The Outer Limits and Jericho. He obviously does have a sci-fi writing background and should be able to handle creating a new V series.

As a kid I was a HUGE fan of the show, even forcing my sister to dress up as a V for Halloween one year and creating her costume myself. I'm looking forward to checking this out and I hope it's an awesome series! And who knows, there might just be a comic book for it too, since TV shows like Eureka and Fringe and Battlestar Galactica have comics.

Which Starship Captain Are You

I was happy with the results, since Janeway IS my favorite Starship captain.

Your result for the Which Starship Captain Are You? test...

Don't you "Aunt Kathy" me!

31% Benjamin_Sisko, 36% Kathryn_Janeway, 12% Jean-Luc_Picard, 2% Johnathan_Archer, 12% William_Adama and 22% James_T_Kirk!

Kathryn Janeway was a fantastic captain. Despite the incompetent writers and producers that plagued much of Voyager's run with "the moral of the story is.." and other Disneylike family-friendly garbage, Janeway excelled in making command decisions and did extremely well with balancing herself on the thin line between aggression and tolerance. She was unique in that she was the only captain that provided a sort of mothership (bad pun) as well as a paternal role as well to her crew. Harry Kim practically called her mom on various occasions, though he was no match for Seven of Nine when it came to begging for attention.

Farwell Star Trek

September 1 marks the end of the Star Trek Experience at the Las Vegas Hilton. After 11 years of living long & prospering they are taking the themed area out. I don't know what they're turning it into, but it will not be a journey to a galaxy far, far away (of course not, because that's Star Wars). No use in complaining about it, resistance is futile, after all.

When Craig and I ran off to Las Vegas to get married we stayed in the Hilton and even visited the Star Trek Experience. I have a glass from Warf's Bar to prove it! The simulation ride made Craig feel sick. The museum was pretty cool - lots of TV & movie props to see.

We did NOT get married in the Experience, just so you know. That's just where we stayed during our visit. But aparently it was a big deal for Trekkies to do so. Youtube has plenty of wedding videos like this one of just such folks being wed at the Experience.

While it is pretty geeky, it still was pretty cool. Someting different from the usual. Probably something we won't see again, as the series begins to fade out of popularity and head out into obscurity. I can say I was there. A pop-culture classic now becomes a memory for thousands of visitors as the exhibit is dismantled.

Pumpkin Dalek

Weather you are a fan of the old Doctor Who TV series or the new Doctor Who TV series, or both, you can have fun creating their very own Dalek-O-Lantern! Pumpkins are plentiful right now, and if you live in SE WI you can head down to the Science and Surplus store for the gizmo's you'll need. Since there isn't any new Doctor Who for a while, having your own in-house Dalek might make you feel a little better.

If you don't even know what a Dalek is, I'm sorry. So, so sorry.

The How-To here.

AWESOME!

Another take on The Wizard of Oz

Have you ever noticed that The Wizard of Oz is one of those stories that has endured lifetimes? It has been done and re-done into a variety of stories since its creation by L. Frank Baum back in 1900. There was the classic movie with Judy Garland as Dorothy. There have been a variety of others too. There have been over 13 sequels written to the original story, and that's not counting all of the "interpretations" of the story. We have a couple of graphic novels and comic books that all are different takes on the Oz story.

This winter Sci-Fi channel is doing a mini-series called "Tin Man" that is their own take on the story. One of the trailers is below.

What do you think? It definitely has a star-studded cast. But just from this trailer it has a "Flash Gordon" feel to it - and I just don't want it to be another version of that show.

Sequential Tart is doing a round table in the Tart Time Machine next month on Wizard of Oz too. Be sure to check that out!

Pay No Attention to the McFarlane Behind the Curtain

According to Variety.com, Todd McFarlane, most well known for his Spawn series and toy line, has written his own version of the Wizard of Oz story for the big screen. He says it's PG-13, dark and edgy and not a Munchkin in sight. Olson, the other guy on the project, says he sees it as more of a PG project... hmmm, creative differences already.

McFarlane toys did do a line of Wizard of Oz toys that was pretty wierd. The two photos are of Dorothy with a Munchkin and the Scarecrow - so you can see how wierd these are.

"Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures are teaming on "Oz," a revisionist take on the L. Frank Baum books that hatched "The Wizard of Oz."

Project was acquired based on an idea by Todd McFarlane that was fleshed out and pitched by Josh Olson ("A History of Violence").

Olson will write and McFarlane will produce with Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk. Rick Benattar ("Shoot ’Em Up") is exec producer."

This is still in its early stages, so we will see how it all flushes out in the end. I'm thinking it might be something like Wizard of Oz meets Pan's Labrynth meets Clockwork Orange.

More Battlestar Galactica

It was rumored for a while that the 4th season of the Battlestar Galactica series would be it's last. However, on Friday Sci-Fi Wire reported that the fourth season will be "open ended," meaning that Eick and Moore don't plan on season four being the last season for the show.

Cool! I love the show! It's one of my favorites. Although most readers know that I wasn't 100% happy with this third season. But the first two were so good that I believe the show can bring back some of that greatness in the coming episodes. I also believe that once I get the third season on DVD and watch the whole thing again that it will be better than when I watched them originally.

The fourth season isn't scheduled to start airing on Sci-Fi until 2008 sometime (I hope early). In the mean time they're doing a 2-hour special on Sci-Fi and DVD that will show us a glimpse of what was going on with the Pegasus after the attack on Caprica and before they met up with the Galactica. That's supposed to air sometime this fall.

Walk-On Role in Stargate Atlantis

It sounds easy to do - Text the word "Gate" to 70459 from now thru 8/7/07. Stargate fans should be all over this! You can click here to watch the contest clip.

Atlantis fans should also check out the action figures. They're by Diamond Select and will probably be out this fall. The first series is pictured.

Who Wants to be a Superhero?

Take a look at this - one of our customers auditioned in the Washington DC area this weekend for Who Wants to be a Superhero. He is Scott King (I have a link to his blog in my links section, and it's working again, so go check it out.) Looks like fun!

We have another customer who was going to be sending in an audition tape too. His character was "The Inferno." Or at least that's what I think - his power was that he's pretty dang hot.

The first season of Who Wants to be a Superhero was pretty silly, but still looked like fun. I wish both of these guys luck! How cool would it be to be the one who supplies comics to a super hero?

Time Travel

"I have invented a machine that can move time. I will call it, a Time Machine." --Stewie Griffin

Tonight/Tomorrow we are all shifting to Daylight Savings Time (well, except maybe for Indiana--I think they don't change clocks). It seems earlier than usual, doesn't it? Well, that's because it is. Usually we switch over the First Sunday in April and back in October.

It seems that the government, not quite happy with the power they've already got over us, has decided to try to control time as well. They passed 2005 Federal Energy Policy Act, and one component of this was turning clocks ahead sooner and keeping them ahead later in the year. I guess they think it will help save energy--except that now I'll have to turn on my bedroom and bathroom lights when I wake up to get ready to go to work, where last week I didn't.

But seriously, don't forget to turn your clocks ahead one hour tonight. Otherwise you're going to look pretty silly when you show up for church an hour late on Sunday morning.

A Good Match

The Sci Fi Channel is teaming up with Virgin Comics, which I think is a good match. It was announced a short time ago that Sci Fi was going to make a movie based on one of Virgin's titles, Sadhu.

Each company can share the properties of the other.
Their plan is to, "seamlessly develop characters and stories for books, television, online and other media," said Virgin Comics' Devarajan. "Together we are creating stories as innovative as the ways consumers will get to experience them."

Sounds good to me! I just wonder what will happen with the Battlestar Galactica comics. Those are currently being published by Dynamite Entertainment.
